One Texan is running for House speaker, Pete Sessions, as Republicans try to fill a vacancy that has paralyzed the House since Oct. 3.

House Republicans had until noon ET Sunday to join the speakership scramble, with the election set for Tuesday morning.WASHINGTON — Rep. Pete Sessions of Waco will be the only Texas contender for House speaker as Republicans try again this week to fill the post that has been vacant for nearly three weeks.

Two committee chairmen, Reps. Roger Williams of Willow Park and Jodey Arrington of Lubbock, opted not to run, announcing their decisions shortly before a noon ET deadline Sunday for candidates to declare their intentions.Sessions declared his candidacy Friday, shortly after House Republicans ditched Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan after he lost three floor votes with ebbing internal support. The other two Texans said they were interested but never formally jumped in.

A group of eight hard-right conservatives invoked a rare procedural maneuver to force a snap vote on removing Kevin McCarthy as speaker. Republicans hold such a slim majority in the House that he could afford no more than four defections. The party’s first nominee for speaker, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., was unable to coalesce the conference and gave up without attempting a floor vote.

The conference has scheduled the election for a third nominee Tuesday morning, with candidates pitching themselves to colleagues in a close-door meeting Monday night., and would have emphasized his business background as a fresh approach to leading the House. A former Texas Secretary of State, a gubernatorial appointment, Williams was first elected to Congress in 2012.Arrington, 51, won his seat in 2016. That makes him a relative newcomer, though he’s risen fast.

He worked for George W. Bush as governor and as president, and served as chief of staff at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.. The blueprint would cap annual growth in discretionary spending at 1% and add work requirements on programs such as Medicaid and food stamps to curb growth..
