Two suspects, Lesiba Frans Ledwaba, 39, and 42-year-old Waner Alberts, appeared in court following their arrest by the Polokwane-based Hawks serious organised crime investigation (SOCI) unit for unlawful possession of explosives.
Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, Limpopo spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, stated that the two men were apprehended on Tuesday in operations supported by the Modimolle explosive section, Polokwane tactical response team, Mokopane local criminal record centre, and Mahwelereng K9 unit. \ Mmuroa explained that the Hawks received intelligence regarding individuals in possession of explosives in the Mahwelereng and Mokopane areas. The SOCI conducted thorough investigations, leading to the identification of the suspects' residential addresses. Subsequently, the Hawks obtained search warrants and proceeded with the operation. \ On Tuesday, a large-scale search and seizure operation involving various police units was executed simultaneously in Mokopane and Mahwelereng. During the operation, law enforcement recovered a substantial quantity of explosives, including four electrical detonators, 20 shock tubes, a full bag containing ammonium nitrate blasting agent, bags filled with Sasol Anfex explosive, reels of detonating cord, and blasting cartridges. In an update, Mmuroa reported that Ledwaba appeared before the Mahwelereng Magistrate's Court on Wednesday facing charges of possession of explosives. Alberts appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, also facing charges of possession of explosives. The case was postponed to January 22 for a bail application.
