Two suspects arrested after Durban jewellery store heist; hunt continues for other who escaped
Two suspects allegedly linked to a jewellery store heist in Chatsworth, in the south of Durban , have been arrested - hours after the robbery.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the robbery took place at a shopping centre on Friday afternoon. Netshiunda said information indicates that a number of heavily armed suspects stormed into the jewellery store and fired shots, one of which injured a civilian. "Police responded and a shootout ensued during a chase. One metro police officer was shot and injured on the leg. Relentless police officers pursued the suspects and two of them were arrested in Umlazi," he said, adding that two blood-stained getaway vehicles were recovered.Netshiunda said investigations were under way to see if the suspects were part of a group that robbed a jewellery store in Phoenix a week ago, in an incident where another police officer was shot and injured.
