Two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers died and seventeen others were hospitalized after their truck overturned in a crash in the Northern Cape on Friday afternoon. Police suspect rainy weather may have contributed to the accident. The SANDF has not yet released the names of the deceased soldiers.
The South African National Defence Force soldiers at the State of the Nation Address in Cape Town on February 6, 2025.is yet to release the names of two soldiers who died in a vehicle crash on the R31 between Delportshoop and Koopmansfontein in the Northern Cape yesterday afternoon.
At this stage it is still not clear what caused the crash but the police’s preliminary investigation suspect rainy weather. Seventeen SANDF members have been hospitalised due to injuries. The crash happened when their truck overturned.Earlier, the Provincial Police Spokesperson Sergio Kock said, “The SAPS are investigating a culpable homicide case following the accident involving a SANDF truck. Preliminary information indicates that the accident occurred on Friday afternoon.”
Kock adds, “The truck was travelling with 19 SANDF members from Lohatla Army Base en route to Kimberley. The SANDF truck was travelling in rainy weather conditions from Lohatla to Kimberley when the accident occurred. The cause of the accident forms part of the police investigation.”
