An international tourist who visited the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town sparked controversy by claiming to have seen dead animals in a tank. Images shared online by the tourist, Jack, quickly gained attention. However, the aquarium swiftly refuted the allegations, stating that the turtle in the video was simply sleeping.
Speaking to Briefly News, Heather Wares, the communications manager at Two Oceans Aquarium, explained that the loggerhead turtle, Kai, was rescued and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the aquarium's Turtle Conservation Centre. Following his recovery, Kai will be released back into the wild. Wares emphasized that the aquarium prioritizes the health and well-being of its animals above all else. The incident also highlighted the aquarium's concern about the impact of misinformation spread through videos like Jack's, which can trigger unnecessary action from animal welfare organizations such as the SPCA. On a positive note, the aquarium expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from its community who defended them against the false claims. Wares stated that this support demonstrated the seriousness with which the aquarium takes its responsibility for animal care
