PHOTO/Communications Nova ScotiaSYDNEY, N.S. — Two Cape Breton facilities will receive a combined $12.5 million from Nova Scotia's $18.3-million cash injection into 14 community rinks throughout the province.
Of the funding, $8.2 million will go towards the Canada Games Complex at Cape Breton University in Sydney for a dedicated hockey hub for women and girls. The facility will become the home to the Cape Breton Blizzards Female Hockey Association."It's not just about sport infrastructure, it's a validation and recognition of equality," said Lamey."This is the first arena in Canada to be filled with girls' hockey teams.
The province has also allocated $4.3 million to the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath for upgrades, including new washroom and change room facilities, as well as accessibility and energy-efficient upgrades. "Today's announcement is great news for the county arena and for those that use this facility," said Paul MacDonald, manager of facilities with Cape Breton Regional Municipality."The upgrades will improve the accessibility and the overall functionality of the building, along with extending the lifespan of a facility that is important to the people of this area.
