Two suspects were apprehended at an illicit abalone drying facility in Eastleigh, Ekurhuleni, following a tip-off to authorities. The arrests transpired yesterday afternoon when law enforcement officials, acting on intelligence provided by the Western Cape Crime Intelligence unit, discovered the suspects engaged in packing abalone into plastic bags at a property in Eastleigh Ridge.
According to Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, the acting Visible Policing and Operations commander and communications officer for Edenvale SAPS, the suspects attempted to evade capture by leaping onto a neighboring property. A vigilant resident, observing the commotion, promptly activated their panic button, triggering a swift response from Mamba Security.In collaboration with Edenvale SAPS and Mamba Security personnel, members of the Western Cape Crime Intelligence team successfully apprehended the suspects. Mashile confirmed that the suspects were detained under charges of violating the Marine Living Resources Act, 19 of 1998, Regulation 36, Subsection 1, as well as for the illegal possession of abalone, estimated to hold a market value of at least R3 million. The suspects were transported to Edenvale Police Station following their arrest.A multi-agency task force, including undercover Criminal Intelligence Unit operatives from Cape Town, Mamba Security, Edenvale CPF, Gauteng Flying Squad, Gauteng Organised Crime, Hawks, and Edenvale SAPS, collaborated in this operation.
