Türkiye's President Erdogan discusses extending the grain deal with Russian counterpart Putin and highlights the impact of the Black Sea initiative on low-income countries in need of grain, which will suffer its suspension most

In a telephone talk with the Russian leader Putin, Turkish President Erdogan highlights the importance of the Black Sea grain deal as a "bridge of peace."Türkiye and the United Nations brokered the Black Sea grain deal last summer. Moscow exited the deal last month, complaining that the international community had failed to ensure that Russia could also freely export its grain and fertiliser as part of that deal.

In a phone call on Wednesday, the two leaders also agreed on Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Türkiye, Communications Directorate said, in a statement. Erdogan said that the long-term suspension of the Black Sea Initiative will not benefit anyone, adding that the low-income countries in need of grain will suffer the most.

On July 17, Russia suspended its participation in the deal, which it signed last July along with Türkiye, the UN, and Ukraine to resume grain exports from three Ukrainian Black Sea ports paused after the Russia-Ukraine war began in February. But even when renewing the deal in previous months, Moscow has complained that the Russian part of the agreement was not being implemented.
