About 100 Turkish and Syrian students held a silent protest at the University of Toronto, claiming the administration has failed to acknowledge the pain they felt from the massive tremor that destroyed their homelands.

— Turkish and Syrian students in this country have been scrambling to collect donations and hold fundraising events to raise awareness and support the aid efforts.

Hundreds of thousands of international students are paying costly tuition fees each year to attend Canadian schools. Hoisting a banner that said “Your Silence Is Loud,” the protesters laid down photo images of the aftermath of the earthquake on the steps. No one came out to speak to them.on the day of the earthquakes to express solidarity and provide students with a list of resources and contacts, including academic accommodations and wellness supports.

“U of T has not properly and genuinely acknowledged the pain of the students,” the 21-year-old from Istanbul said Thursday. “We need that acknowledgment.”“We promoted through our own social media networks. The important thing here is all of these could have been multiplied in effect if we had the full support of U of T behind our back,” said Torgay, 19.

“The University of Toronto community’s thoughts remain with those here and abroad who have been affected by this disaster, including more than 600 U of T students who are citizens of those countries,” he said.
