BREAKING: Turkey has been hit by another earthquake measuring 7.5 magnitude
What caused this earthquake? The science behind itThere are fewer than 20 quakes greater than magnitude 7 anywhere on the planet each year. The closer to the surface, the more of the earthquake's energy is focused on buildings and infrastructure above.
The fact Turkey, and this region specifically, is earthquake prone, means there's a good level of preparedness in terms of rescue teams and equipment.Footage from the larger towns and cities clearly shows that many tall residential buildings survived the shaking intact. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, and US Geological Survey, are both reporting the second quake.Reuters has filed these photos from Syria - there are many that are too graphic to show but these get across the scale of destruction...Entire rooms can be seen shaking in footage of the inside of buildings struck by a major earthquake in Syria and Turkey.
Giving an update on the situation, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said 45 countries had offered to help the search and rescue operation so far.
