A group of Turkey Creek residents are rejoicing now that their piece of Merrillville’s history is expected to return to them.
Christina and Christopher Holst and several of their neighbors appeared before the Merrillville Town Council August 8 to protest the tearing out of a structure on the median at the 73rd Avenue and Van Buren Street entrance to the subdivision, one of the town’s oldest.
What they really wanted, however, was to see the Great Sauk Trail sign returned to its rightful place. Town Council members at that meeting seemed surprised that the 73rd Avenue entrance had been ignored, especially since the same sort of structures are repaired in other parts of the town all the time.“We have accidents all the time on 93rd, and when they happen, we fix it,” Councilman Shawn Pettit, D-6, said. “I don’t see why we can’t now. We need to fix this.”
“It was our anniversary, and I was calling everyone: ‘Oh my God, look who’s here!’” she said. “We didn’t want to have to wait a month.”
