It was a day of political theatre — but not much drama — at The United People of Canada’s “embassy” at St. Brigid’s church Thursday.

“In light of multiple calls for service, police will be maintaining an enhanced presence at the location going forward until such time as the civil dispute is resolved,” police said in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The TUPOC supporters let loose with sprays of water and in the ensuing scuffle Rizzotto grabbed a super soaker and returned fire. He was then chased around the church until he was grabbed by TUPOC director William Komer, who tore off the dog mask and put Rizzotto in a headlock on the sidewalk across from the church.

“It seems like they’re being allowed to get away with anything. If I were to come to this park with a boom box to hold my own private dance party, I guarantee you the police would come and say I was creating a disturbance.” St. Brigid’s owner wants TUPOC out of the deconsecrated Catholic church where they’ve been set up since early summer, saying they haven’t paid their rent or provided proof of insurance.Article content

Komer says the charade is an attempt to defuse the tension between the group and its Lowertown neighbours, though some of TUPOC’s critics took it more as a provocative poke in the eye.
