U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville is remaining silent amid a wave of criticism over comments he made at a weekend rally.

On Monday, NAACP President Derrick Johnson joined those criticizing Alabama’s junior Senator.

“Senator Tuberville’s comments are flat out racist, ignorant and utterly sickening,” Johnson said in a statement. “His words promote a centuries-old lie about Black people that throughout history have resulted in the most dangerous policies and violent attacks on our community.”“We are calling on all those who support an Alabama that is welcoming to all to join with the Alabama NAACP in calling on Senator Tuberville to issue an immediately sincere and thorough apology,” the NAACP said.
