TPS announced Thursday that a rotation of 80 officers would be patrolling the transit system in response to spike in violent incidents.

One day after the police announced they were increasing their presence on Toronto’s transit with 80 officers, many riders on the busiest TTC lines said they hadn’t noticed much of a difference.

Some people are indifferent to recent events. Peter Lodge, who rides the subway every day, says he’s been vigilant and looks over his shoulder more, but doesn’t feel too worried. The only thing he’s noticed is there haven’t been as many people on board. Pan said the presence of police is especially needed during rush hours when subways, buses and streetcars can get particularly crowded.

Jaime Wilson, a transit rider, said having more police in the system doesn’t help address potential underlying causes of violence, including homelessness and mental health issues.
