Fast forward 35 years. For Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson to formally honour Duthie with a Key to the City at City Hall Thursday, it unlocked memories of his past and was beyond anything he could ever have imagined.Article content He also invited his high school buddies, TSN’s Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger, along with former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson and long-time Ottawa 67’s coach and general manager Brian Kilrea.

After moving full-time to CJOH’s sports department in 1995, one of his first feature stories was a grocery shopping trip with Alfredsson, who was only weeks into his first season with the Ottawa Senators.Article content“It felt like he was a rookie at the same time as I was a rookie,” Duthie said. “He was living in a downtown hotel and he was throwing pop tarts into his shopping cart. I think I’ve used that footage about 20 times ever since. He was classy, so good to me.

“That always felt weird to me,” he said. “Growing up, if I could have had a chance at being the local sports guy for the rest of my life, it would have been beyond a dream. But it never sat well with me. I never felt comfortable. So, I left for a news job in Vancouver, which was crazy, because all I ever wanted to do was sports.”Article contentDuthie spent a few years as a TSN sports desk anchor, while also hosting CFL and NBA shows.

Through it all, the fondness for Ottawa has never disappeared and Thursday’s ceremony reinforced that feeling.
