Tory tells Toronto to ‘trust me’ not to abuse strong mayor powers
to override the will of a majority of city councillors, Mayor John Tory told Torontonians on Thursday.
Under new legislation Tory will be able to get bylaws aligned with provincial priorities, such as housing and transit, passed with just over one-third of council support. Tory said he asked Premier Doug Ford for the powers before the Oct. 24 election because he needs to be able to force housing density and options, including citywide legalization of rooming houses, on some reluctant council colleagues.
Those instances, he said, include overriding the majority will of council to make “available more options for housing, which include triplexes, duplexes, fourplexes, rooming houses” — but only after trying and failing to forge council consensus.
