President Donald Trump on Friday urged Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan to cut a deal with her state's anti-quarantine protesters, some of whom gathered in the state capitol on Thursday armed with assault weapons.
“The Governor of Michigan should give a little, and put out the fire. These are very good people, but they are angry,” Trump wrote in a tweet. “They want their lives back again, safely! See them, talk to them, make a deal.”governors across the country who have faced backlash over strict stay-at-home orders in their state. But in Michigan, where Whitmer’s restrictions were especially restrictive as cases of coronavirus continue to rise, outrage over the mandate has been especially severe.
On Thursday, the GOP-led state legislature sought to take Whitmer on by refusing to extend Michigan’s coronavirus emergency declaration while voting to authorize a lawsuit challenging her authority to hand down such orders and other mandates to curb the pandemic. It was against this backdrop that hundreds of conservative activists stormed the state capitol Thursday — including some carrying assault rifles — rallying on the lawn outside and demanding to be let on to the House floor,Despite opposition from Michigan Republicans, Whitmer unilaterally extended the state’s state of emergency that was set to expire Thursday night.Wearing a mask is for smug liberals.
