May will step aside on Friday from Conservative Party leadership but will remain prime minister until her successor is elected.
LONDON — President Donald Trump on Tuesday prodded outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May, who will resign as her party's leader at the end of this week, to "stick around" until the two leaders can strike a deal on trade.
Trump, who elicited chuckles with his plea to May to stay put, said he expects to reach “a very, very substantial trade deal” between the U.S. and U.K. once Britain has departed the European Union, which is currently not allowed to negotiate bilateral trade agreements. By Tuesday afternoon, however, it was unclear if any of the meetings yielded progress, particularly given May’s lame-duck status and Britain’s so far unsuccessful attempts to withdraw from the European Union.By signing up you agree to receive email newsletters or alerts from POLITICO. May, for her part, called for a “wider economic partnership” between the U.S. and the U.K., as well as "free and fair" trade markets for the two countries.
