Sweden has a COVID-19 mortality rate of 256 per million residents, three times higher than neighbor Denmark and six times Norway’s.

, while there have been much lower tolls in its locked down Nordic neighbors: Denmark has had 452 deaths and a mortality rate of 78 per million, and Norway has had 210 deaths, or 39 per million residents.

The country chose not to institute stay-home restrictions upon the belief that doing so would hurt the economy and exacerbate the crisis—to voluntarily social distance and it only banned gatherings of 50-plus individuals and forbade citizens from visiting nursing homes as of late March. At least half of Sweden’s COVID-19 deaths are people who lived in senior homes; Swedish officials admit they have failed to protect the elderly, reports“We’re on a sort of plateau,” Anders Tegnell, the country’s chief epidemiologist who crafted its lax policy, told Swedish news outlet TT, reported by Bloomberg on April 19 when the country had 14,662 infections; now it has 21,092 infections.

Tengell says herd immunity—when 70% to 90% of the population develops immunity to a disease—is a means to the end, not a goal in itself. However, Dr. Nate Favini, medical lead at preventative health clinic Forward, toldthat aiming for herd immunity should not be a tactic employed without a vaccine because it will result in mass fatality. In Sweden’s case, the positive cases would have to more than double in order to get close to herd immunity, which could be devastating.
