President Trump's protectionist policies, including tariffs on steel imports and potential non-renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), could harm South Africa's car exports and cost thousands of jobs. The article warns of the 'law of unintended consequences', highlighting how American companies like Ford, with a major factory in South Africa, could be negatively affected, while Chinese vehicles subsidized by the Beijing government may fill the affordability gap in the US market.

South Africa n car exports, especially to the US, may suffer under Trump’s tariffs, potentially costing thousands of jobs.

Those South African fans of Donald Trump would do well to ponder – as they crow about him “sticking it to the ANC” – what is known as the “law of unintended consequences”, which means they themselves will end up being punished, though they may not be his target. His tariff regime will make, for example, steel imports from Canada and China more expensive for American manufacturers, which will inevitably drive up prices in the US.

The law of unintended consequences applies to this, too, because one of the companies which will be hardest hit will be Ford, which is American-owned and has a massive world-class factory outside Pretoria and into which it recently invested more than $1 billion.

Trump Cuts Aid to South Africa, Offers Refuge to White AfrikanersTrump Cuts Aid to South Africa, Offers Refuge to White AfrikanersPresident Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned Donald Trump after the US leader signed an executive order cutting off foreign assistance to South Africa and offering refuge to White Afrikaners. The order, titled 'Addressing Egregious Actions of the Republic of South Africa', cites race-based discrimination and accuses South Africa of seizing 'ethnic minority Afrikaners' agricultural property without compensation under the recently adopted Expropriation Act. AfriForum, a civil society group that has claimed a white genocide in South Africa in reference to the Expropriation Act, says it's staying put in South Africa but insists Trump's actions are a direct result of Ramaphosa and his government's policies.
