Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum's lawyers say Trump's 2018 election claims show the Democrat's corruption trial is politically motivated.

On Thursday, Trump said in a Truth Social post that he helped DeSantis become governor that year by preventing a"stolen" election with the aid of U.S. attorneys andagents in Florida. The former president, who has escalated his feud with the recently reelected Florida governor—who may be his rival in 2024's presidential race—said that he"fixed" DeSantis' failing candidacy. Gillum might have won the 2018 election otherwise, Trump hinted.

Attorneys for Gillum, a former Tallahassee mayor who is facing multiple federal corruption charges, filed a motion Friday that cited Trump's comments as evidence that his prosecution is politically and potentially racially motivated, according to the. The filing from attorneys David Markus and Katherine Miller is seeking the dismissal of all charges against Gillum.

"Former President Trump's posts raise serious questions about how exactly Trump 'fixed' DeSantis' campaign and what Trump directed the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office to do, and whether there is any connection to the FBI's investigation and later prosecution of Gillum," the lawyers' motion reportedly states.

Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is pictured at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale on November 11, 2018. Attorneys for Gillum, who is facing federal corruption charges, have reportedly filed a motion related to Donald Trump's recent remarks concerning the 2018 governor's race, in which Gillum lost to Ron DeSantis.
