Late interventions by former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk jeopardize a bipartisan effort to avert a government shutdown just days before a funding deadline.
The United States was facing a potential government shutdown on Thursday (Dec 19) after late interventions by Donald Trump and Elon Musk complicated Congressional efforts to fund operations through the New Year. Federal funding was set to expire Friday night, and lawmakers had agreed on a temporary measure known as a continuing resolution (CR) to keep government agencies running.
While the CR initially seemed poised to pass a floor vote, debt hawks in the House of Representatives raised objections to what they perceived as excessive spending unrelated to the bill's core purpose. However, just twelve hours after Musk's initial tweet, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance issued a statement condemning the CR's add-ons and unexpectedly demanding that it include an increase in the nation's debt limit. Typically, negotiating debt limit increases and passing related legislation in both houses of Congress takes weeks. Government functions were scheduled to begin curtailing at midnight on Friday night
