Truecaller has rejected claims that it is violating South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act.

Truecaller global head of corporate communications Hitesh Bhagat has denied that the app violates privacy laws by harvesting users’ contacts.about how the call screening app works, Bhagat said Truecaller does not require access to a user’s contacts during signup.“You shouldn’t confuse ‘contacts access’ with ‘contacts upload’.”

Trucaller users can also search numbers within the app and save them to their contacts, which also requires access to this permission., Truecaller explained that it had an “Enhanced Search” feature that users could opt into if they used the web version or did not download it from the App Store or Play Store.

Truecaller attempts to shift the responsibility onto subscribers in terms and conditions, which stipulate that users must obtain consent before providing the data. Therefore, Truecaller was still the “responsible party” in Popia parlance and cannot be absolved of its responsibilities simply because it collected the information from a subscriber.

Truecaller sidestepped a question about whether it would consider implementing such a notification system.
