Liberal MP Taleeb Noormohamed made the surprise announcement at a meeting of the public safety and security committee Friday morning.

OTTAWA—The Liberal government is bowing to immense public pressure and scrapping controversial amendments to an existing gun bill that would have massively expanded the list of illegal guns in Canada.

The amendments would have legislated a ban on thousands of kinds of firearms, some of which had already been deemed illegal under regulatory measures. The amendments had been dropped with little notice on the desks of MPs on the public safety committee last fall as they were studying a gun bill that had been focused on a handgun sales ban and other related firearms offences.

But the backlash didn’t just come from traditional opponents of gun regulation in Canada, but from Indigenous leaders, territorial premiers, even members of the Liberals’ own caucus who were concerned the bans proposed were going too far.
