Over the weekend, Canada granted the exemption for a turbine that underwent repairs at a Siemens Energy facility in Montreal. The turbine is part of the Nord Stream pipeline, a major source of natural gas from Russia to Germany.

The German government had been pressuring Canada for the exemption for Siemens because Russia claims that without the turbine it can’t operate the pipeline at full capacity.Article content Russian gas recently accounted for about 35 per cent of Germany’s total supply. Gas is usually sent onward to other European countries as well.

He said the decision doesn’t change Canada’s overall determination to use sanctions to weaken the Russian regime and help Ukraine win the war. Zelenskyy summoned Canada’s ambassador in Kyiv over the issue and said it would be perceived as a “manifestation of weakness.” On Monday, the Ukrainian World Congress, a diaspora group, filed for a judicial review of the government’s decision to let the turbine go.Article content
