Every time you start your vehicle’s engine, the battery is discharged somewhat. In normal circumstances , the battery is quickly brought back to full charge and everything’s fine. But on bitter days, this recharging process can take more time and require more electrical energy from the vehicle’s charging system: the belt-driven alternator. Alternator output is governed by the speed of its drive pulley, which is connected by a belt and thus controlled by the engine’s crankshaft speed.
The problem is that the alternator must also supply power to a number of different systems in a vehicle, not just the battery. The power it produces when running also powers the HVAC system, window and mirror defrosters, fuel pump- and injection systems, anti-lock brake components, power windows, wipers, and anything else electrical. On bitterly cold days, many of these components are working extra hard to keep us warm and safe, drawing more power that would otherwise go back into the battery.
The worst-case scenario for a cold-discharged battery is to start the the chariot on a -25° C morning, and turn the HVAC blower and temp up to high, along with the rear window defroster to clear the windows. You turn on the seat- and steering-wheel heaters and take off, but not too quickly because the roads are icy and the traffic is brutal.
