The National Hurricane Center said Earl has become an extratropical low in the North Atlantic.
Sept. 10 marks the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, as that's the date when the most tropical storms and hurricanes have roamed the Atlantic Basin in the historical records.
An extratropical cyclone is a system that gets its energy through the collision of a cold air mass with warm, moist air. The NHC said the future disturbance only has a minimal chance of developing into a cyclone but is expected to stay harmlessly out over the Atlantic basin for the foreseeable future.when sea-surface temperatures are the warmest, upper-level wind relax and drier air is typically not widespread.
While the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, Sept. 10 is the date when the most hurricanes and tropical storms have occurred in the historical records.
