Forecasters say the storm will likely turn into a hurricane before it makes landfall in the northern Gulf region.
This is the forecast track of a potential tropical cyclone that's expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Francine on Monday, Sept. 9, targeting the southern U.S.says the storm, which will be named Tropical Storm Francine, will likely strengthen into a hurricane on Tuesday or Wednesday before it makes landfall along the northwestern U.S. Gulf Coast.Shortly before 11 a.m. Eastern time Monday, the hurricane center upgraded the potential tropical cyclone to Tropical Storm Francine.
A tropical storm watch has been posted for Barra del Tordo to the mouth of the Rio Grande, and from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Port Mansfield, Texas, with tropical storm conditions expected within 48 hours. Forecasters say as much as 4 to 8 inches of rain could lash the region, “with local amounts to 12 inches from the coast of far northeast Mexico northward along portions of the southern Texas Coast and across southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi into Thursday morning.”risk of considerable flash and urban flooding,” the hurricane center noted.
