TROPHY SHOWDOWN: Wanamaker vs. Stanley Cup vs. Best of the Rest: Comparing the trophies of major North American sports and their stories
The NFL’s Vince Lombardi Trophy gets a checkmark for being named after someone, maybe two for being named after someone people have heard of, and a third check for being silver. But at just 20.75 inches and seven pounds, it’s small enough to lose in your golf bag. Plus, they make a new one each year to give permanently to the winner. Where’s the sense of history with that?
Major League Baseball’s trophy is a contender. At 20 inches and 30 pounds, it’s hefty enough to be taken seriously. And it’s sterling silver. But, somehow it’s named The Commissioner’s Trophy. Seriously?!? Think of all the people they could have named it after. Instead it was named after a rotating cast of guys everybody hates. And, of course, they make a new one every season.Article content
The PGA Championship switched to a presentation trophy much earlier and with a much better story. It began in 1926, when back-to-back champ Walter Hagen “forgot” to bring the treasured hardware to the tournament, saying, “I will win it anyway, so I didn’t bring it.” And Hagen did win, and then he won again the following year, making it four in a row. There was a secret though, and perhaps a little extra motivation to win. Hagen had, in fact, lost the Wanamaker.
