Heartfelt tributes have been made to David Barry Pilkington, a football and cricket legend who dedicated his life to nurturing the next generation of sports stars. Known as Pilky, he was a referee, linesman, and fixtures secretary for multiple leagues, and a true stalwart of grassroots sports. He was also a familiar face at East Lancashire Football Alliance and Ribblesdale Cricket League matches. David's sense of humor, love for banter, and sportsmanship made him well-known in the area. He will be greatly missed.

His daughter, Joanne, said: “Dad had a great sense of humour. He did these funny dances and made us all laugh. He loved the banter on pitches and the sportsmanship.“He was very well-known in the area. After he passed away, #RipPilky was trending on Twitter.” He attended Peel Park Primary School in Accrington and Accrington Grammar School. David moved to Sycamore Grove in Baxenden and when he met his wife, Sylvia, they moved to Oswaldtwistle.
He trained and mentored young linesmen and referees. He received an award last year from the Lancashire FA for his unwavering commitment and service to grassroots football. Pilky was a fierce competitor on the field, a great umpire and a tireless advocate for local cricket and football across East Lancashire.
