Ian Davis lived near Ormskirk but grew up in Rossendale
Tributes have been paid to a West Lancashire councillor who was a leading independent political group member, had Rossendale roots and supported Burnley FC, worked as an accountant and director in the flour mill and engineering sectors, and escaped Iran during its 1979 revolution.
Ian Davis' career was spent in private business. But he also believed in the role of local councils and national governments to intervene. And for public ownership of key energy, transport and utilities sectors, he said in an interview earlier this year. This week, the Mayor of West Lancashire, Coun Marilyn Westley, announced his death at the borough council's latest full meeting. She expressed her sadness at the news and said details about his funeral would be confirmed in coming days. West Lancashire councillors stood in silence as a mark of respect and then made some speeches about Coun Davis.
"Professionally, he was an accountant and an experienced businessman in the flour mill and engineering industry. He travelled extensively around the world. He was in Iran in 1979 at the time of the fall of the Shah. Conservative group leader Coun David Westley said: "I first met Ian at a parish council meeting. He and I had political differences but we worked with each other on different committees and responsibilities over the years. He had an impish sense of humour.
In his view, protection of Lancashire farmland for food production, rather than for housing, logistics or industrial developments, was a key need. He said the West Lancashire area produced crops such as carrots, potatoes, oats and barley which were essential.
