'A light that will never go out'
Tributes are pouring in for the landlord of iconic Manchester pub The Star and Garter Andy Martin following the heartbreaking news of his death. Hundreds of people have taken to social media to pay their respects.
"We are all obviously in bits and I know that so many of you will feel this loss too. He was a wonderful dad, husband, brother, son and friend and this has left an unfillable hole in all our lives. Helen x." As well as being famous for its music nights, in recent years Andy opened up the pub for TV filming to help cover its costs. The Star and Garter famously doubled as The Crow's Nest in hit Sky comedy Brassic when Andy would happily mingle with cast, including Joseph Gilgun and Michelle Keegan.
And Ben Walker reflected: "Absolutely awful news. One of the true great originals of Manchester and a huge part in the lives of so many people. No exaggeration to say some of the greatest nights of our lives were in the S&G and Andy was a big part of it all. Massive love to all his family x." Last year Andy told the M.E.N. how the pub, without the 'dedication' of Morrissey fans, would have had to close due to an 'unexpected' tax bill from grants he received during the pandemic.
Its future had hung in the balance for more than a decade previously, but it was considered secure as part of plans to regenerate the area behind Piccadilly station.
