That letter is not something the school ‘just throws around,’ according to Fabian McKenzie, head coach of the Capers women’s basketball team. “He was an inspiration because in sports we look to the sports people to be heroes and then we say, ‘they are courageous and resilient for coming back and winning.’ Trevor won at life and he taught us all to be courageous.”
‘Big T,’ is the name Ryan MacPherson and others in the sporting community had for Rutherford because of his friendly demeanour, smiling face and quick wit. “Whenever something was going on, he was there. Looking back, I think it gave those kids something to look at and say ‘hey, it’s not going great for me today,’ but Trev was loving life. It gave them something to rally around.”
Rutherford’s resiliency had quite an effect on club members, which is why he was made a lifetime member. “He had quite an effect on everybody in the neighbourhood. Whenever there was a celebration Cathy and Walter made sure he was there and part of the community. He’ll never be forgotten. If there’s gold medals for anything, they should have one each.”
