🏝️ Vlogger nasdaily recently faced harsh criticism for calling Bali the 'whitest island in Asia' in a video — but the Bali Tourism Agency has come forward to praise the social media influencer for helping to promote the Indonesian island to tourists.
has found himself facing harsh criticism and accusations of promoting over-tourism and glorifying gentrification, especially from Indonesians there.
Many comments on Mr Yassin's social media channels questioned the"meaning" behind his video’s focus, asking:"What's so interesting about having white people in certain region?" On YouTube, one user commented:"If I called a black man a non-white person, I think I'd get smacked." Another Indonesian user from Java, who lived in Bali for a couple of months during the Covid-19 pandemic, wrote on YouTube:"Bali is beautiful... But please don't make the locals look like Westerners' servants in this video."One Instagram user from Bali wrote:"Watching this feels like a throwback when we were colonised."
The user added that Mr Yassin's video showcased restaurants frequented by tourists in the popular resort village of Canggu, and was not representative of Bali as a whole. In response, Mr Yassin said that he had thought about this for a long time but eventually decided that for him, the"net effect" of tourism on domestic industries is positive.Critics disagreed, arguing that tourism and gentrification are two different things. Moreover, as one Instagram user said:"Many governments do not treat or care for their people as they should."
