The leader of the Metropolitan Police has questioned whether the law takes predatory indecent exposure crimes seriously enough They are currently covered by the same legislation as streaking, which Sir Mark Rowley said struck him as “odd”
“It is the same offence in law if a drunken idiot streaks across a football pitch or if somebody masturbates in a dark ally to intimidate a woman walking home from the Tube.
He accepted, however, that regaining public trust will take time: “It’s not all about the negative, it’s about the positive, if you keep doing positive things better, you change the reputation bit by bit and that’s what makes a difference. Asked if the public focus on the crimes of Couzens and Carrick rather than the good work the force is doing bothered him, Sir Mark responded: “It does.
“They’re as horrified and embarrassed and shocked as you and I are by what’s come out, but they want a sense that Londoners want them to win, and I want them to win… The good men and women succeeding is more important or at least as important as me sorting out the people who shouldn’t be allowed to exist in policing and it’s that balance.”
