The bargaining unit represents about 11,000 public servants, most of whom work in technical, engineering and scientific support jobs.

“We are encouraged that PSAC has agreed to mediation,” the Treasury Board said in a statement. “We also recognize that negotiations require significant effort, compromise and good faith from both sides in order to succeed. We remain committed to reaching a deal at the table that is fair for employees and reasonable for taxpayers.”

PSAC is seeking a 13.5 per cent raise over three years for its four main bargaining units – at 4.5 per cent a year – while the government has offered 8.5 per cent over four years. For months, PSAC has been sabre-rattling in public, preparing its members for a general strike to back demands for wage increases that cover inflation and the contractual right to telework.

Treasury Board President Mona Fortier has said the return to office mandate is a non-negotiable management right.
