Hundreds gathered for all three days of Northern Ontario’s biggest gem, mineral, rock, fossil, bead, jewellery and lapidary arts show and sale
The 41st annual Gem and Mineral Show took place this weekend at Carmichael Arena in Sudbury. The event is Northern Ontario’s biggest gem, mineral, rock, fossil, bead, jewellery and lapidary arts show and sale. Organized by the Sudbury Rock & Lapidary Society, the 2023 show saw displays of prospecting and metal detecting, a gemologist who will identify gemstones for free, demonstrations on flint knapping and wire wrapping, and lapidary arts.
That’s the best part of the show, said Joseph D’Oliveira, owner of Noveira Minerals, Fossils and Jewelry. At the show with a wide variety of geological delights, D’Oliveria told Sudbury.com his love of rocks began young, and brought him a hobby and career as well. He also operates an Etsy store called Pretty Rocks Cheap, which sells exactly what you think it does.
A group for metal detectorists who share a love of digging for that elusive treasure, and to do so with respect to the land and land-owners, it’s an organization based in Sudbury since 1983. Larry Henderson, the current president, told Sudbury.com he began metal detecting about 10 years ago, and hasn’t stopped since. But really, he too found the love of treasure at a young age.
