Following a successful first week in St. Anthony, it looks as though the province’s travelling orthopedic team could be eyeing an expansion into other areas of the province.
The team completed a total of 12 surgeries in its first week, with one surgery unable to take place due to travel and weather issues. Divisional Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Eastern Health, Dr. William Moores says that because they need specialized equipment and training it’s not possible for them to operate in all hospitals throughout the province.Carbonear is one, explains Moores, but there will be an added challenge with setting the program up. Unlike St. Anthony, he explains, there is currently no orthopedic program in Carbonear so it will be a different starting structure for them.
