The Transportation Safety Board is investigating a Canadian Pacific Rail derailment that took place in the town of Bassano on Wednesday yyc

“It was agriculturally based grain that went off the tracks. It didn’t roll out onto the roadway, the cars didn’t come out onto the roadway. Nobody appeared to be hurt. There were no explosions. This is just an incident that has occurred that needs to be cleaned up.”Advertisement 3Davis said she expects it will take a few days for the mess to be cleaned up and the line to be restored to service.

Don Crawford, a senior investigator with the TSB, said it was too early to determine the cause of the derailment and it could be more than a year before a final report is released. “As far as any initial factors that caused the derailment, we’re still assessing that so we don’t have an answer for what caused the derailment,” he said. The train was westbound for the Port of Vancouver and included 203 loads of grain, pulled by five locomotives and was 3,583 metres in length. Crawford said there are ancillary lines in the area to allow other trains to pass by.

While there was previously a train derailment in Bassano in 2009, there have not been a lot of incidences on this stretch. Salem Woodrow, a spokesperson for CP, confirmed in an email there were no injuries or public safety concerns. Crews and equipment were dispatched to respond to the incident.“They’ve kept our community safe and they’re moving quickly to get that main line back up and running,” she said.
