Rodeo trail riders uphold Western horse culture tradition -- one clip-clop at a time
The trail rides remain a much-loved evocation of the Texas horse-culture tradition, even as riders in cowboy hats and dusters pass Jack-in-the-Box restaurants and H-E-B stores.
Estevez and her husband, Charlie, had arrived at the Chamber of Commerce Park in La Vernia the night before so she and her Blue Feather Band could entertain the riders who’d stopped there to overnight. “There was dancing and barbecue and everyone had a lot of fun,” said Estevez, the band’s lead singer. She was borrowing Piston from her friend and fellow band member Robert Barnett and said she was unsure about what to expect from the day’s 15-mile ride: “I only know I’ll probably have a sore, sore bottom when it’s over.”Members of trail riding organizations ride along U.S. 87 as part of the Old Chisholm Trail Ride outside La Vernia.
As the caravan of horses and wagons clip-clopped and rumbled through downtown La Vernia, restaurant patrons, hair salon customers and one day care full of excited preschoolers braved the misty rain to watch, take photos and cheer them on.Six-year-old Decker Evans was the youngest rider in the group, handling her white horse Chunky with as much skill and elan as the other, older riders.
