TRAIKOS: Wheeler says 'there's a freedom' in no longer being the captain of the Winnipeg Jets Via Michael_Traikos
Looking back, it was a gamble that could have gone two different ways. On one hand, Bowness risked alienating a veteran whose voice was respected inside the dressing room. On the other, there was the potential of freeing a player of a responsibility that in recent years had become more of a burden.
“Those things are more important than the ‘C’. We knew he was going to continue to lead the way he leads and that was not going to change. If you’re a leader in our league, you don’t need an ‘A’ or a ‘C’ to lead. That hasn’t changed.” “It was a disappointment last year,” said Wheeler. “We knew what we had on this team. It was just a matter of bringing it out.”Winnipeg has been one of the best — if not, most surprising — stories of the first half of the season.
“There’s more to the story,” said Wheeler, who has another year remaining on his contract. “Nothing that I’m ready to share, but just more or less it’s been growth personally. Some areas where I struggled in some years. Playing in a small, Canadian market and being captain, all those things kind of added some weight to that.”Article content
