TRAIKOS: Vegas' Eichel in a happier place now that he's on a winning team Via Michael_Traikos
Heading into Tuesday’s game against the Maple Leafs, Eichel was a major reason why the Golden Knights were riding a seven-game winning streak and had started the season as one of the hottest teams in the NHL. With five goals and 14 points in 13 games, he is leading the team offensively. And, as showcased by a pair of highlight-reel overtime plays last week — one against Winnipeg and another against Washington — his contributions have been more than meaningful.
“It’s better when the team is winning,” said teammate Jonathan Marchessault. “When your team keeps losing every game and you do like highlight reel goals, it is what it is. But you want to be on a winning team. The fact that we play so well and we’re winning hockey games, it just shows that he’s up there for the top centremen in the league.”Part of it is because he’s playing on a good team with good linemates, two things that were in short supply during his time in Buffalo.
“I think that’s probably one of the reasons why I argued as much as I did for the surgery I desired,” said Eichel. “I felt that was my best chance to get back to as close to full health as possible. it doesn’t happen overnight. You don’t just get surgery and things go back. It takes time.” Eichel, who had 14 goals and 25 points in 34 games with Vegas last year, said he never felt like himself when he joined the Golden Knights lineup last February. He was out-of-rhythm and hesitant in his abilities. It didn’t help that he had missed the first half of the season. Or that the Golden Knights were missing Stone and so many other players because of injury.
