It is alleged that he impounded a truck and demanded payment for its release.
In a decisive move against corruption, the North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, has praised the Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit for their successful operation leading to the arrest of Tumelo Jeffrey Tau, a 39-year-old traffic officer within the JB Marks Local Municipality.Reports indicate that Tau had allegedly stopped a truck driver, alleging that the driver had outstanding traffic fines. He then impounded the truck and demanded a payment for its release.
Upon receiving a tip-off about Tau’s activities, anti-corruption members organized an undercover sting operation. They allege to have caught Tau red-handed accepting the money, leading to his immediate arrest. Following his arrest, Tau appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he was granted R1 000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, July 1.
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the ACIU for their dedication and effective action in tackling corruption within the traffic department. He emphasized that such actions undermine public trust and that the police force will continue to rigorously pursue justice against corrupt practices.
