A tractor trailer got stuck wedged inside the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel late Thursday morning, creating a traffic nightmare heading into lower Manhattan that appeared likely to last for hours.
The driver of the truck seemingly either didn't see — or ignored — the posted signage that states tractor trailers are not allowed in the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Kathy Sheridan said in a radio interview.
"He actually ignored the officers who tried to stop them at the entrance of the tunnel and he got about mid-river and it got stuck in the tunnel," Sheridan said in the interview. The truck was stuck in the Manhattan-bound side of the tunnel, leading to a major backup into Brooklyn.NBC New York was told that the truck got stuck around 10 a.m., and that the Manhattan-bound tube might not be opened until 2:30 p.m., which would likely have heavy impacts on the evening commute. While that tube remained closed, the other tube remained open for two-way traffic, but delays were heavy by the early afternoon.
