Tropical storm warnings have been issued for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, and Anguilla; Saba and St. Eustatius; St. Maarten; and Guadeloupe, St. Barthelemy and St. Martin. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra, as well as the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Dominica.
A tropical storm warning means tropical storm conditions are expected in the area within 36 hours, while a watch means those conditions are possible in the area, generally within 48 hours.Fiona is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 6 inches in the northern Leeward Islands, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, though Puerto Rico could see isolated totals up to 12 inches, particularly across its eastern and southern sections.
The eastern Dominican Republic could see 6 to 10 inches with isolated amounts up to 16 inches possible. Those rains could cause flash and urban flooding, as well as mudslides in areas of higher terrain. Southern and eastern Puerto Rico aznd the eastern Dominican Republic are at particular risk in that regard, NHC says.
Swells generated by Fiona are affecting the Leeward Islands and are expected to spread westward to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Friday and Saturday. These conditions could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
