Toyota SA CEO Andrew Kirby expressed cautious optimism for the new vehicle industry in 2025, predicting a return to pre-pandemic sales levels. Speaking at the company's State of the Motor Industry (SOMI) event, Kirby highlighted the encouraging Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures but cautioned about the inflationary risks posed by the weaker rand observed in January.
He emphasized the importance of substantial interest rate reductions to stimulate sales and acknowledged the challenges in forecasting due to uncertainties surrounding the magnitude of these reductions.\Kirby anticipates that the vehicle industry will achieve total sales of 535,000 units in 2025, representing a 3.7% increase from 2024. Toyota SA maintained its market leadership for the 45th consecutive year in 2024, selling 128,663 units and securing a 24.9% market share. The Hilux emerged as the top-selling model, followed by the Corolla Cross and the Starlet. The company also unveiled the new Hilux Legend 55, a special edition commemorating 55 years of Hilux production. This variant features a wide body treatment, unique exterior and interior design elements, and a roller shutter. \Toyota SA also announced upcoming model releases for 2025. The Fortuner GR-Sport, featuring a powerful 2.8-litre GD-6 engine and GR-tuned suspension, will be introduced in March. The updated GR Yaris will boast a more powerful engine with 201kW and 400Nm, along with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and additional luxury and safety features. The GX, a rugged SUV, will be powered by a 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 engine and offered in SE and Overtrail variants. Finally, the upgraded LX range, including the new LX 700h flagship model with a hybrid powertrain, will arrive in February.
