'You don’t need to be a kid or indeed even have a kid to enjoy ToyStory4,' says V.F. critic rilaws. Read his full review:
and others) have to push the borders of both the toys’ psychology and physicality. In—about a quest to reunite Bonnie with her favorite new toy —we see Woody and friends not only chance exposure to the human world, but also interact with it in ways I think are unprecedented for the series. It’s a bit jarring, and yet all that flouting of rules and strained suspension of magical disbelief ultimately leads to a worthwhile message.
So, yes, the movie deepens the motivations of its synthetic characters, which may rankle some purists. But I quite appreciated the gesture toward another trajectory, as much as I enjoyed the movie’s elastic verve, its flurry of wit and visual invention. As is true of the best Pixar movies, a carefully teased-out deeper meaning acts in rich concert with the fun and eye-popping stuff.
I should probably talk about Forky, because everyone’s gonna like Forky. He’s a crude DIY toy whom Bonnie fashions out of a spork, some pipe cleaner, and other schoolroom ephemera—a sorry-looking thing, drooping googly eyes and all. Yet Bonnie loves him, enamored of her own creation. If only Forky felt the same way.
Watching him achieve sentience has a wonderful twinge of Frankensteinian horror, as Forky is at first horrified by his newfound existence. He’s almost suicidally determined to assume what he believes is his rightful role as mere garbage.
