An influx of holidaymakers to the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality could put an already strained sewage and water system into crisis.
The municipality spent parts of this year working to avert Day Zero – the day dams run dry – amid a severe water crisis that sees dams currently at below 16%. Gary Koekemoer, Algoa Bay chairperson of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, said the water crisis had largely stabilised thanks to the completion of the Nooitgedacht water scheme, a project aimed at linking the metro to water from the Gariep Dam, as well as the sinking of several boreholes around the metro.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
