A 59-year-old tourist from Piet Retief, Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed, was tragically killed by an elephant in Kruger National Park while attempting to rescue his two grandchildren. According to witnesses and police, the children were taking pictures near a bridge when the elephant appeared. The victim rushed to their aid, but was fatally attacked. The family is understandably devastated by the incident.
One of the people who witnessed an elephant trampling Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed from Piet Retief at the Malelane Gate yesterday afternoon, January 25, says the victim was trying to save his two grandchildren.
'The children were next to the bridge when Ammed saw the elephant close to them. He rushed over to save them, and it attacked him,' said the witness who asked to remain anonymous.ALSO READ: Kruger National Park elephant tramples tourist to death Some of the witness’s information was concurred by the provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdlhuli. 'Preliminary investigations suggest the children were taking pictures next to the bridge. The victim saw an elephant behind the trees and rushed over to save the two kids. That is when it attacked and killed him.'Lowvelder managed to track down Ammed’s family. A close relative, Mohamed Shah, said the family is devastated about the incident.
'We are waiting for the official results of the investigation and will not presume anything,' said Phaahla.
