VICTORIA — One of central B.C.’s leading tour and transportation companies is warning that the government’s plan to allow ride-hailing services later this year could damage its industry and lead to the proliferation of unregulated and unsafe tour operators.
“The issue which is we’re constrained by rules that Uber would not be,” said Stamp-Vincent. “That’s fundamentally unfair. And it makes me indignant.Transportation Minister Claire Trevena was unavailable for an interview Tuesday and her ministry was unable to answer questions about how tour operators might be impacted by ride-hailing, including whether government has taken into account those concerns.
In states like California, Uber offers wine tours. But in B.C., companies like Stamp-Vincent’s face a complex and time-consuming set of approvals from the Passenger Transportation Branch, and the Passenger Transportation Board, to get approval to operate such tours. There are already illegal and unlicensed companies using private vehicles to run wine tours or small-scale shuttle services to ski resorts by advertising on Facebook and websites like Kijiji.
Although the government studied ride-hailing and its impact on taxi companies, little if any work was done on how the app-based private driver service could disrupt commercial tour, shuttle and passenger transportation businesses. Trevena has focused virtually all of her public comments on the issue arguing in favour of a level playing field for the traditional taxi industry.
